Tim Young
Tim Young is one of the best known mastering engineers in Europe. His career started in 1971 as a runner for Trident Tape Services. In 1976 Tim started at the former CBS Studios as a copy engineer and within two years he had progressed to cutting vinyl records on their new Neumann VMS80 lathe.
During his seventeen years at CBS, Tim mastered literally hundreds of hit singles and albums and with endorsements from The Clash and The Smiths it wasn’t long before his reputation for quality and inventiveness grew and he was in demand from new clients.
Tim has always had a broad love of music and he relishes the prospect of working on a wide variety of projects. As a self-professed ‘all-rounder’, Tim’s always been keen to avoid being pigeon-holed into any one particular genre of music.
Tim’s recent clients include: Van Morrison, Hugh Cornwell, The Beatles, Bjork, Starsailor, Elbow, The Kooks, Massive Attack, Captain, Amy Macdonald, Grinderman, DJ Shadow, Manic Street Preachers, Bat For Lashes, Placebo, Babyshambles, and McFly.
International artists include: Camille, Westernhagen, Herbert Groenemeyer, Van Belle and Da Weasel…
In 1993, an opportunity presented itself – the chance to build Metropolis Mastering. A dream team was recruited, consisting of Tim, Ian Cooper and Tony Cousins. All three were united in their objective to challenge accepted standards and change the general industry attitude towards mastering as a creative art. For instance, dissatisfied with the popular Neumann consoles everyone was using, the team designed and built their own. Tim cannot now imagine working in an environment that doesn’t have the technical standards the Metropolis team have achieved.
In recent years, Tim has been concentrating more and more on 5.1 DVD mastering including Led Zeppelin and Queen. Tim’s also very excited about new technologies and trends in the mastering world which he likes to combine with his own experience and wisdom.
Tim is now available for Online Mastering sessions.
